About TalentStories
Wealth, investing, health, exercise, diet, relationships, sleep. Name an area that we spend time in, and we talk about it; we work to improve at it, we optimize it.
But what about the realm where we spend one third of our waking hours? The one we navigate every day, over the course of decades.
I‘m talking about work.
Work is a huge source of fulfilment, meaning and self-worth for us. It impacts who we are, our quality of life, even our relationships.
And yet, we don‘t talk about work. We like to complain about it. We have hundreds of business thinkers and coaches, and books about “how to lead.”
But work, jobs, careers, impact -- is all a journey. And we don‘t discuss the twists and turns, the joys and struggles, the lessons we accrue along the way.
Why? Because it‘s taboo. We‘re not meant to leave jobs, let alone talkabout compensation. We‘re not meant to leave managers, let alone talk about promotion.
Instead, we wing it, and we hope for the best. We do it alone, and we toil without support, or intent. So we learn slowly, one painful lesson at a time.
Meantime our world of work is changing dramatically. Not in “the future”, not “soon” -- right now. Profoundly and overnight. At a scale that‘s hard to appreciate and a pace that‘s hard to keep up with.
Remote work, hybrid offices, gig work, Great Resignations, software eating the world. Mental health. crypto, inclusion, artificial intelligence. Power. It’s all changing. What it means to work, and take meaning from our work is changing.
That makes navigating our careers even more complex. It makes doing it alone even more suspect. And it makes the need to talk about work even more urgent.
Welcome to TalentStories the missing conversation about work: a guide for the curious, the bold and the optimistic on our quest to define meaning and success in a complex, changing world.
On TalentStories, we talk to people about their jobs, careers, andbusinesses. We tease out their lessons, motivations, and stories. And we discuss and explore the trends and ideas we need to keep up with to learn, grow -- and thrive.
